What is numerology?
Numerology is an old tradition that treats numbers as a symbolic language for human character and the cycles of life. The most widely used method today is the system attributed to Pythagoras, the ancient Greek mathematician: the digits of your birth date and the letters of your name are added up, the total is reduced to a single digit, and the meaning of that number is interpreted.
Numerology is not a fortune-telling tool but a framework for getting to know yourself. Your numbers describe your tendencies, your strengths and the areas you can work on; the decisions are still yours to make.
How do you calculate your life path number?
Your life path number is the most important number in numerology, and it comes from your birth date alone. Your birth month, day and year are each reduced to a single digit, then those three numbers are added together and reduced again. If the result is 11, 22 or 33, it stays as a master number.
For example, July 14, 1990 gives 7 for the month, 5 for the day (1 + 4) and 1 for the year (1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 10, then 1); 7 + 5 + 1 = 13, which reduces to a life path of 4. Reducing the month, day and year separately is the standard method because it keeps master numbers from disappearing, while adding every digit in one go can hide them on some dates.

Name numbers: expression, soul urge and personality
Every letter in your name has a value. The total of all the letters gives your expression number, also called the destiny number; the vowels alone give your soul urge, or heart's desire, number; and the consonants give your personality number. Y counts as a vowel when no other vowel sits next to it, as in Lynn, and as a consonant otherwise.
Your expression number describes your talents and the direction your name points you in, your soul urge reveals what your heart truly wants, and your personality number shows what people notice in you first. For the most accurate result, use your full birth name as it appears on your birth certificate.
Numerology letter chart
In the Pythagorean system, the alphabet runs through the numbers 1 to 9 in order: A=1 through I=9, then J starts again at 1, S returns to 1 and Z ends on 8. Accented letters take the value of their base letter, so é counts as e, ñ as n and ç as c.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A · J · S |
| 2 | B · K · T |
| 3 | C · L · U |
| 4 | D · M · V |
| 5 | E · N · W |
| 6 | F · O · X |
| 7 | G · P · Y |
| 8 | H · Q · Z |
| 9 | I · R |
Master numbers: 11, 22 and 33
11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers, and they are not reduced to a single digit. 11 stands for intuition and inspiration, 22 for turning big visions into lasting structures, and 33 for unconditional love and guidance.
Master numbers carry greater potential, and an equal measure of responsibility. In tired or stressful periods, they tend to be lived through the calmer energy of their root numbers: 2, 4 and 6.
Accented letters and other alphabets
Names in the Latin alphabet are calculated with the Pythagorean chart, A=1 through I=9 and then again from J=1. Accented and special letters take the value of their base letter: é = e, ñ = n, ç = c, ü = u, and ß counts as ss. Names written in Cyrillic are calculated with the Russian Cyrillic numerology chart, and names written in Arabic script with traditional abjad values.
Personal year numbers
Personal years move in a nine-year cycle, and each year carries a theme of its own.
Numerology FAQ
What do I need to use the numerology calculator?
Your date of birth is enough for your life path, birthday and personal year numbers. For your expression, soul urge and personality numbers, you also need to enter your full name. You do not need your birth time.
What is the difference between the life path number and the expression number?
Your life path number comes from your birth date and describes the main road you walk through life. Your expression number comes from your name and shows the talents you bring to that road and the way you express yourself.
Is the expression number the same as the destiny number?
Yes. Expression number and destiny number are two names for the same name number: the values of all the letters in your full name, added up and reduced to a single digit. A few sources also call the birth date number your destiny number; in this calculator, that number appears as your life path.
Which name should I use: my full birth name or the name I go by?
Traditional numerology uses the full name you were given at birth. A nickname, the short name you use every day or a married name describes the energy you carry under that name, so you can calculate both and compare them.
When does a personal year start?
This calculator follows the calendar year, so your personal year starts on January 1. Some numerologists count the new personal year from your birthday instead; in the months around your birthday, you may feel the influence of both years at once.
Is numerology scientific?
No. Numerology is not a scientific method but a tradition of symbolic interpretation. Read your results as a source of inspiration for self-reflection, and do not base important decisions on numbers alone.
