Find Your Rashi by Name (Name Rashi Calculator)
Your name rashi (naam rashi) is the Vedic zodiac sign linked to the first sound of your name. Indian astrology gives each of the 108 nakshatra padas its own syllable, and every rashi holds nine of them. Type your first name in English or Hindi to find your rashi by name, along with the nakshatra, pada and akshar it falls on. Where an English spelling can be read two ways, as with T or D, the calculator shows both readings.

Name Rashi Chart: Syllables for All 12 Rashis
Each rashi owns nine name syllables, one for every pada it covers. The Devanagari letter is the reference and the Roman spelling is a guide, which is why Ta or Da can appear in two rows: Hindi has both a dental and a retroflex version of each. Makara also lists the four Abhijit syllables.

How to Find Your Rashi by Name
The method rests on the Avakahada chakra, the syllable table printed in most panchangs. The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of four padas each, which makes 108 padas. Every pada carries one traditional sound, its name syllable or akshar. Because a rashi spans two and a quarter nakshatras, each rashi collects exactly nine syllables. Find the pada whose syllable matches the opening of your name and you have your naam rashi, together with the nakshatra and pada behind it.
What counts is the first syllable as you say it, not the first letter on paper. Pooja opens with पू (Pu), the first pada of Hasta, so her name rashi is Kanya (Virgo). Priya opens with पी (Pi), the fourth pada of Uttara Phalguni, which also belongs to Kanya. Rahul starts with रा (Ra), Chitra pada 3, and lands in Tula (Libra), while Neha starts with ने (Ne), Anuradha pada 4, in Vrishchika (Scorpio).
Vowel openings follow a simple rule. A name beginning with अ or आ, such as Aarav or Anjali, takes the first pada of Krittika and belongs to Mesha (Aries). Names that open with any other vowel (इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ) fall in Vrishabha (Taurus), so Ishaan, Uma and Om share one rashi. Mohan shows the usual consonant pattern: मो is Purva Phalguni pada 1, and the rashi is Simha (Leo).
Nakshatra by Name: Syllables for Each Pada
All 27 nakshatras are listed with the syllables of their four padas, followed by Abhijit. Find the opening syllable of your name to see its nakshatra and pada. The last column gives the rashi; a nakshatra that straddles two rashis lists both.

Naam Rashi vs Janma Rashi: Which One Should You Use?
Janma rashi is the sidereal sign the Moon occupied when you were born. It is worked out from your date, time and place of birth, and your kundli is built around it: Vimshottari dasha starts from the Moon's nakshatra, and Ashtakoot gun milan compares the two partners' Moon signs and nakshatras. Naam rashi, by contrast, is a naming convention. It comes from the sound of your name, not from any position in the sky.
The name rashi has two traditional uses. The first is when birth details are missing: many people read their daily or monthly rashifal by name rashi, and some families compare names for a rough match, often called naam se gun milan. The second is namkaran, where a baby's name is chosen to begin with the syllable of the Moon's nakshatra pada at birth. For a name chosen that way, naam rashi and janma rashi are the same sign.
If you know your birth time, give the janma rashi priority for kundli reading, dasha timing and marriage matching, and keep the name rashi as a fallback or a cross-check. When the two differ, nothing is wrong. It simply means your name was not picked from the nakshatra syllable of your birth, which is common for nicknames, for names chosen for their meaning and for anyone named outside the namkaran custom.
Spelling Traps: T, D, Th, Sh, B and Conjunct Letters
English spelling hides distinctions that Hindi keeps apart. Hindi has a dental T and D (त, द) and a retroflex T and D (ट, ड), and the chakra places them in different rashis. Tanvi read with ता falls in Tula, but read with टा she falls in Simha. Deepak with दी is Meena (Pisces); with डी the name moves to Ashlesha pada 1 and Karka (Cancer). The calculator lists both readings so you can pick the sound your family actually uses.
South Indian spellings add a twist: in Tharun or Preethi, th stands for a plain त rather than the aspirated थ. The calculator therefore reads th as त first and offers थ as the alternative. Sh is harder still. The chakra has no syllable for श, so the tool treats it like स, which puts Shreya on से (Purva Bhadrapada pada 1) in Kumbha (Aquarius) and shows ष, Hasta pada 2 in Kanya, as the other option. Panchangs disagree on this sound, so neither answer is the only correct one.
B is missing from the chart too and is read as व (V), so Bablu begins on वा in Vrishabha. Conjuncts go by their first consonant: Kshitij (क्ष) is read as की and falls in Mithuna (Gemini), Trisha (त्र) as ती in Tula, and Gyan (ज्ञ) as जा in Makara (Capricorn). The श्र of Shreya follows the श rule above. Typing the name in Devanagari removes all of these doubts, because each letter then has exactly one place in the table.
Two smaller rules complete the picture. After a consonant, ai and au are read as ऐ and औ, which count with E and O: Kailash becomes के in Mithuna and Gaurav becomes गो, Shatabhisha pada 1, in Kumbha. A few consonants, among them घ, छ, थ, ध and फ, have a single syllable that covers every vowel. Dhruv is therefore read as धा and placed in Dhanu (Sagittarius), and the result is marked approximate.
Rashi by Name First Letter: What Each Letter Can Give
The A–Z table above answers the popular search for a zodiac sign by name alphabets, but a letter is only a starting point. A few letters map to a single rashi. Names starting with L, such as Lakshmi, belong to Mesha; M names such as Meera to Simha; N names such as Nikhil to Vrishchika; and R names such as Rohan or Rajesh to Tula. If your name begins with one of these four letters, the first letter alone settles the answer.
Most other letters split by the vowel that follows. K gives Mithuna for Ka, Ki, Ku, Ke and Ko (Karan, Kabir, Krishna), but Kh moves to Makara, as in Khushi. G splits three ways: Gh is Mithuna, Ga and Gi are Makara (Ganesh), and Gu, Ge and Go are Kumbha. H gives Mithuna only for Ha, as in Harsh, while Hi, Hu, He and Ho belong to Karka, as in Hema. Y goes to Vrishchika with Ya, Yi or Yu (Yash) and to Dhanu with Ye or Yo (Yogesh).
C and J need a closer look. Chu, Che and Cho are Mesha (Chetan), Cha and Chi are Meena, and Chh is Mithuna (Chhavi). J and Z are read as ज: Ja and Ji are Makara, and Ju, Je and Jo, the Abhijit syllables, are counted in Makara as well, so Jaya, Jyoti and Zara share that rashi, while Jh goes to Meena. Bh is a sound of its own, giving Dhanu for Bha, Bhi, Bhu and Bhe (Bharat, Bhavya) and Makara for Bho. F and Ph are read as फ and land in Dhanu.
Choosing a Baby Name by Nakshatra Syllable (Namkaran)
In namkaran, the naming ceremony, the family first finds the nakshatra and pada the Moon occupied at the baby's birth. That pada supplies the auspicious starting syllable, and the name is chosen to begin with it. A child born with the Moon in Hasta pada 1 would receive a name starting with पू, such as Pooja; a child born in Chitra pada 3 would get one beginning with रा, such as Rahul. The janma rashi then doubles as the name rashi.
To use this page for naming, take the birth nakshatra and pada from the Vedic birth chart, read the matching syllable in the nakshatra table, and draw up a shortlist of names that open with that sound. Then type each candidate into the calculator to confirm that it lands on the intended pada. This check matters most for spellings with T, D or Sh, where an English form such as Tanvi can point to two different rashis.
Name-based matching works the same way in reverse. When a couple's birth times are unknown, some families compare the two name rashis and the nakshatras behind the first syllables, which is what people mean by naam se gun milan. Treat it as a rough guide. The full Ashtakoot score out of 36 is calculated from the Moon's real nakshatra and rashi at each partner's birth, so a proper kundli match needs both birth charts.
How to Read Your Result, and Its Limits
The result card gives four facts. The syllable is the akshar your name was matched to; the nakshatra and pada show where that syllable sits in the chakra; the rashi lord is the planet that rules the sign; and the element is the sign's element. When the spelling allows more than one sound, the alternatives box lists every reading. If they all fall in one rashi, the answer holds whatever the pronunciation.
Keep in mind what the name rashi is. It is a convention for linking names to the zodiac, not an astronomical position, so it says nothing about where the planets stood when you were born. The same name always gives the same rashi here because the syllable table is fixed and documented. For your real Moon sign, and for anything that depends on timing, such as dasha periods or marriage matching, enter your birth details in the Vedic birth chart.
Any name can be read by its first sound, including European or Turkish names: Alice and Ayşe start on A in Mesha, Marie on Ma in Simha, Gabriel on Ga in Makara, and Thomas on तो in Vrishchika. The chakra was designed for Indian names and Indian pronunciation, though, so for such names treat the reading as a curiosity rather than a hidden truth about the person.
Rashi by Name: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my zodiac sign by name?
Take the first syllable of your name as you pronounce it and look it up in the Avakahada chakra, the Vedic table of 108 name syllables. The rashi that owns that syllable is your name rashi. Vikram begins with वी, the third pada of Rohini, so his rashi is Vrishabha (Taurus); Sameer begins with सा in Shatabhisha and gets Kumbha (Aquarius). The calculator above does this lookup instantly and adds the nakshatra and pada.
Is the zodiac sign based on name or date of birth?
Your actual zodiac sign comes from your date of birth. In Western astrology that is the Sun sign; in Vedic astrology the main sign is the janma rashi, the Moon's sidereal sign, which also needs birth time and place. A sign by name belongs to a separate tradition: naam rashi links the opening sound of a name to a rashi. It helps when birth details are unknown, but it does not replace a birth-date sign.
What is the rashi for names starting with A, S, V, P or D?
A names such as Aarav or Anjali are Mesha (Aries), except openings with Ai or Au, which count with Vrishabha. S names such as Sachin or Sunil fall in Kumbha (Aquarius). V names such as Varun or Vivek are Vrishabha (Taurus). P names such as Pooja are Kanya (Virgo), though Ph and F go to Dhanu. D depends on the sound: dental Di, Du, De and Do give Meena (Pisces), dental Da gives Kumbha, and the retroflex ड gives Karka (Cancer).
What is my nakshatra by name?
Your name nakshatra is the one whose pada carries the first syllable of your name. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four syllables, one per pada; Rohini, for example, holds O, Va, Vi and Vu. So Varun (वा) falls in Rohini pada 2, and Nikhil (नी) in Anuradha pada 2. Like the name rashi, this is a naming convention. Your birth nakshatra is the Moon's position when you were born and comes from your kundli.
Should I use name rashi or janma rashi for kundli matching?
Use the janma rashi whenever both birth times are known. Ashtakoot gun milan scores a couple from each partner's Moon nakshatra and rashi at birth, and the points can change completely if name rashis are used instead. Matching by name is a traditional fallback for families without birth details. If you have to rely on it, read the score as indicative and confirm with full kundlis once the birth data is available.
Why do websites give different rashis for the same name?
Three things explain most of the disagreement. Some sites go by the first letter instead of the first syllable and miss that Ka and Kha belong to different rashis. English spelling hides the dental and retroflex T and D, and Sh has no fixed place in the chakra. And many name-meaning lists simply attach a sign to a name editorially, which is why Marie can appear as Virgo, Sagittarius or Capricorn. This calculator follows the syllable table and shows alternative readings openly.
Which rashi for names starting with Sh, Ksh or Tr?
Conjunct letters take the rashi of their first consonant. Ksh (क्ष) counts as क, so Kshitij is की, Mrigashira pada 4, in Mithuna (Gemini). Tr (त्र) counts as त, so Trisha is ती, Vishakha pada 1, in Tula (Libra), with Simha as the retroflex alternative. Sh (श) has no syllable in the chakra: this tool reads it like स, placing Shreya, Shruti and Shivam in Kumbha, and lists ष in Kanya as the second option, since traditions differ.
Does rashi by name work for English names?
Yes, the lookup works for every name, because only the opening sound matters. Emma and Ethan start with ए and fall in Vrishabha, Sophia starts with सो in Kumbha, James and Zara are read as जा in Makara, Charlotte begins on चा in Meena, and Liam on ली in Mesha. The chakra was built for Indian names and Indian pronunciation, so for an English name the result is a cultural curiosity. Your birth-date sign remains the one Western astrology uses.
