How is zodiac compatibility calculated?
In astrology, the compatibility between two signs is assessed by the angle between them on the zodiac. Signs that share an element form a trine and are considered the most harmonious match. Fire and air signs, and earth and water signs, support each other through a sextile. Signs that share a modality but have clashing elements form a square, which adds tension and momentum to the relationship. Signs that sit opposite each other on the zodiac attract and complement one another.
Our calculator scores these relationships separately for love, friendship, work and communication. Small adjustments are made for signs that share a modality: two cardinal signs may clash over who leads when they work together, and two fixed signs can be strong on loyalty but stubborn in communication. Once you add the Moon and rising signs, the result becomes far more personal than Sun sign compatibility alone.
Why are rising and Moon signs key to accurate compatibility?
Sun sign compatibility shows how two people’s core motivations meet. But everyday closeness, emotional security and the rhythm of living together have a lot to do with the Moon sign. In astrology, the harmony between one person’s Sun and the other’s Moon is considered one of the most important indicators in a relationship.
The rising sign, meanwhile, describes first impressions and how two people present themselves to the world as a pair. That’s why, when you enter Moon and rising signs, the tool weights them into the result: Sun–Sun 40%, Moon–Moon 20%, Sun–Moon cross compatibility 20% and rising–rising 20%.
Zodiac compatibility by element
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) feed each other’s enthusiasm and get along easily with air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius); air fans the flames of fire. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) understand each other’s need for security and strike a natural balance with water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces); water nourishes earth.
Relationships between fire and water, or air and earth, take more effort: one is fast, the other deep; one lives in ideas, the other in tangible results. These differences don’t make a relationship impossible, but they do require both people to learn each other’s language.

A love compatibility percentage is a symbolic indicator; it doesn’t predict whether a relationship will succeed. Looking only at Sun signs shows just a small part of the picture. Adding Moon and rising signs makes the result more personal, and the most thorough assessment compares two full birth charts.
How is zodiac compatibility with rising sign calculated?
When you also select both people’s rising signs in the calculator, the relationship between the two rising signs is added to the result with a 20% weight. If you don’t know your rising sign, you can find it from your date, time and place of birth with our rising sign calculator.
Can incompatible signs be together?
Yes. Signs that form a square or a quincunx need more effort to get along, but that doesn’t mean the relationship won’t work. Many strong relationships grow by handling their differences consciously, and Moon and Venus compatibility can help balance those differences.
