Planetary positions are calculated astronomically. Astrological meanings are symbolic interpretations, not scientific personality tests or predictions of future events.

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. To calculate it, you need your date, time and place of birth. Enter your details and this rising sign calculator instantly shows your ascendant, your Sun and Moon signs, and the range of birth times for which your rising sign holds.

What is a rising sign (ascendant)?

In astrology, the rising sign is also known as the Ascendant, or ASC. It is the sign where the eastern horizon meets the ecliptic, as seen from your birthplace at the moment you were born. This point marks the start of the first house in your birth chart and determines which signs the other eleven houses fall in.

In astrological interpretation, the rising sign describes first impressions, the outward manner you project, how you approach new situations and how you set out in life. Your Sun sign symbolizes “who you are,” while your rising sign symbolizes “how you come across and how you take action.”

How does the ascendant calculator work?

First, the latitude and longitude of your birthplace are looked up. Then your birth time is converted to Universal Time using the time zone and daylight saving rules in force on that date. Turkey, for example, observed daylight saving time until 2016, so the same clock time can correspond to a different Universal Time in different years; this tool relies on the IANA time zone database.

From Universal Time and longitude, the tool calculates local sidereal time, and from that, together with your latitude, the degree where the eastern horizon crosses the ecliptic. All calculations on this page use Swiss Ephemeris, and your Sun and Moon signs are found the same way.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

The rising sign is very sensitive to birth time; for births close to a sign boundary, a difference of a few minutes can change the result. Checking your birth certificate, hospital records or family records is the most reliable way to get it right.

If you only know your time roughly, look at the time window in your result: the tool shows the start and end times during which your rising sign stays the same. If your estimated time falls inside this window, the result is very likely correct. If you’re near the edge of the window, consider the adjacent sign as well.

Why does the rising sign change about every two hours?

Earth turns on its axis roughly once every 24 hours, and in that time all twelve signs rise over the horizon once. The average is two hours per sign, but because the ecliptic sits at a slant to the horizon, some signs rise faster and others more slowly.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the signs from Capricorn through Gemini rise more quickly, while those from Cancer through Sagittarius take longer. At Istanbul’s latitude, Aries and Pisces rising last about 1 hour 11 minutes, while Leo and Scorpio rising last more than 2 hours 30 minutes. That’s why an accurate birth time matters even more for someone with Aries or Pisces rising.

How to read your rising, Sun and Moon signs together

Known in astrology as the “Big Three,” the Sun, Moon and rising sign form the core summary of a chart. The Sun sign describes your basic motivation and identity, the Moon sign your emotional needs and inner world, and the rising sign the manner you project and the first impression you make.

For example, someone with a Virgo Sun and Leo rising may come across as warm and self-assured at first, yet reveal a meticulous, analytical nature once you get to know them. These interpretations are symbolic; a full reading weighs the whole chart, including the planets and houses.

How long does each rising sign last in Istanbul?

Durations were calculated minute by minute with Swiss Ephemeris over one sidereal day at Istanbul’s latitude (41° N). Other cities in Turkey may differ by a few minutes.

Rising sign calculator: frequently asked questions

What is my rising sign, and how do I find it?

Enter your date, time and place of birth in the rising sign calculator on this page. It applies the time zone and daylight saving time automatically and shows your rising sign alongside your Sun and Moon signs.

Can I calculate my rising sign without a birth time?

Not with certainty. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so a birth time is needed. If you know your time approximately, calculate with your best estimate and check the valid time window in the result.

How often does the rising sign change?

About every two hours on average, but the duration varies by sign and latitude. In Istanbul, Aries and Pisces rising last about 1 hour 11 minutes, while Leo and Scorpio rising last about 2 hours 33 minutes.

Which is more important, the rising sign or the Sun sign?

They describe different things. Your Sun sign reflects your core identity, while your rising sign shapes the manner you project and sets the house layout of your chart. Astrologers read both together with your Moon sign.

Does your rising sign change with age?

No. Your rising sign is calculated for the moment of your birth and stays fixed in your birth chart. Some astrologers say its influence feels stronger with age, but that’s a matter of interpretation.

Does daylight saving time affect the rising sign calculation?

Yes. If you were born on a date when daylight saving time was in effect, your clock time may have been set an hour ahead, which can change your rising sign. This tool automatically applies the time zone rules in force on your date of birth.

Why is my rising sign different in Vedic astrology?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which today differs from the tropical zodiac by about 24 degrees. As a result, your Vedic ascendant (Lagna) usually falls in the previous sign. You can compare the two with our Vedic birth chart tool.
