What does the ascendant describe?
It describes first impressions, instinctive approach and the way a person meets the outside world.
Why exact birth time matters
The ascendant changes quickly, so even small time differences can shift house cusps.
How it is used
The ascendant starts the first house and anchors the rest of the house system.
How is the rising sign calculated?
The calculation needs a birth date, recorded local time and birthplace. The historical time zone converts local time to UTC. The time and geographical coordinates then determine where the eastern horizon intersects the ecliptic. The ascendant degree describes that intersection. A birthday or Sun sign alone cannot determine a rising sign. Use the birthplace, rather than your current location.
What if your birth time is approximate?
Check a birth certificate or hospital record when available. If the time is somewhere between 10:00 and 10:30, calculate both possibilities and compare the ascendant sign, degree and house cusps. This shows sensitivity to the time uncertainty; it does not recover the true birth time. We do not claim that appearance or personality traits can establish an exact recorded time.
Why might another calculator disagree?
Check the date format, AM/PM selection and whether you selected the correct city. Tropical and sidereal zodiacs use different sign boundaries. Historical daylight-saving rules and geographical coordinates can also change a comparison. The relationship between the ascendant and the first house depends on the house system; this calculator uses Placidus. Compare calculation settings before comparing interpretations.
