Zodiac Sign Calculator: What’s My Zodiac Sign?

Enter your date of birth

Planetary positions are calculated astronomically. Astrological meanings are symbolic interpretations, not scientific personality tests or predictions of future events.

Your zodiac sign is the sign the Sun was in on the day you were born; in astrology it’s called your Sun sign. Just enter your birthday and this zodiac sign calculator instantly shows your sign, element and ruling planet. If you were born on a day when the Sun changed signs, the tool spots it and uses your birth time to give you the exact result.

Star sign dates chart

The date ranges below are based on the days the Sun most often entered each sign in Turkey time between 1950 and 2035. If you were born on a changeover day, check your exact result with the calculator above.

How is your zodiac sign calculated?

Seen from Earth, the Sun makes one full circuit each year along a path called the ecliptic. The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology divides this path into twelve 30-degree segments, starting from the March (spring) equinox. Whichever 30-degree segment the Sun occupied at the moment you were born determines your zodiac sign.

This sun sign calculator uses Swiss Ephemeris to find the Sun’s longitude at the start and end of your birthday. If the Sun stayed in the same sign all day, the result is definitive and no birth time is needed. If the Sun changed signs that day, the tool shows the exact time of the change and asks for your time of birth.

Why do star sign dates vary from source to source?

A year isn’t exactly 365 days long but roughly 365.24 days. Because of leap years and time zones, the day the Sun enters a sign can shift by a day from one year to the next. Between 1950 and 2035, for example, the Sun entered Aries (in Turkey time) on March 20 in 56 of those years and on March 21 in the other 30. That’s why the zodiac sign dates you find online often disagree by a day.

A fixed list of dates can give the wrong answer to anyone born on a changeover day. The reliable method is to check the Sun’s actual position in the year you were born, and that’s exactly what the calculator on this page does.

Sun sign vs. rising sign vs. Moon sign

In everyday conversation, “my sign” means your Sun sign, and your date of birth is all you need to find it. Your rising sign is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born; because it changes roughly every two hours, it requires your birth time and place. Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in, and the Moon spends about two and a half days in each sign.

Astrologers read these three together: the Sun describes your core identity, the Moon your emotional needs, and the rising sign the attitude you project and the first impression you make. To see all three at once, try our rising sign calculator.

Born on the cusp: which zodiac sign are you?

People born between two signs are often described as being “on the cusp,” but in tropical astrology the Sun is only ever in one sign at a time. If you were born on a changeover day, your sign depends on whether your birth time came before or after the moment the Sun changed signs.

It’s natural to see a few traits of the adjacent sign in yourself; the other planets in your birth chart and your rising sign can also explain that influence. A full birth chart shows these details.

Zodiac signs by element and modality

The signs are divided into four elements. The fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; the earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; the air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; and the water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Fire stands for drive and initiative, earth for practicality, air for ideas and communication, and water for feelings.

Each sign also has a modality. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) open the seasons and set things in motion; fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sustain; mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and transform.

Zodiac sign calculator: frequently asked questions

How do I find my zodiac sign by birthday?

Just enter your date of birth in the zodiac sign calculator on this page. It uses Swiss Ephemeris to work out which sign the Sun was in on the day you were born, then shows your sign, element and ruling planet.

Do I need my birth time to find my zodiac sign?

On most days, no: the Sun stays in the same sign all day. There are twelve changeover days a year, though, and if you were born on one of them, your sign depends on your birth time. The tool detects this automatically and asks for your time.

What sign are you if you were born on March 20 or 21?

In Turkey time, the Sun enters Aries on March 20 in most years and on March 21 in some. If you were born on either date, your sign could be Pisces or Aries. Enter your date and time of birth in the calculator to see the exact result.

Is my zodiac sign the same as my rising sign?

No. Your zodiac sign, or Sun sign, is based on your date of birth. Your rising sign depends on your birth time and place and changes roughly every two hours. Two people born on the same day can share a Sun sign but have different rising signs.

Why are zodiac sign dates different on every website?

Because of leap years and time zones, the day the Sun enters each sign shifts by a day from year to year. Fixed lists don’t show this. For an exact answer, you need a tool that calculates the Sun’s actual position in the year you were born.

Why is my zodiac sign different in Vedic astrology?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which today sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac. As a result, your Vedic Sun sign is usually the sign before your Western one. You can see your Vedic result with our Vedic birth chart tool.

Does my zodiac sign determine my personality?

Astrological interpretations are a symbolic language, not a scientific personality test. Sign descriptions offer a framework for reflecting on yourself. Your Sun sign is only one part of your birth chart.
