How to calculate your birth chart, step by step

A birth chart calculator needs just three details: the date, the time and the place you were born. Follow the steps below and your chart will be ready in a few seconds; after that, it’s a matter of reading the result in the right order.

1. Enter your date of birth

   Pick the day, month and year from the calendar. If your birth was officially registered on a later date, use the day you were actually born rather than the one on the record.

2. Enter your birth time as precisely as you can

   A birth certificate, hospital record or family notes are the most reliable sources. Every four minutes of difference in the time moves your ascendant by about one degree on average.

3. Choose your place of birth

   Typing the town or neighborhood rather than just the state or province pins down the coordinates. Latitude, longitude and the time zone in effect on that date, including daylight saving time, are filled in automatically.

4. Calculate your chart

   Planetary positions are calculated with Swiss Ephemeris data, and houses with the Placidus system. Your result page is saved, so you can come back to your chart later using its link.

5. Start with your Big Three

   Your Sun sign describes your core identity, your Moon sign your emotional needs, and your rising sign how you come across to the world. Beginning with these three points is the most solid way into a chart reading.

6. Read each planet with its sign and house

   The sign a planet occupies shows how its energy is expressed, while its house shows which area of life it works in. Planets marked retrograde (Rx) point to themes that are experienced in a more inward way.

What does your birth chart result show?

On the result page you’ll find the signs, degrees and minutes of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, plus Chiron and the North Node. Each placement also shows the house it falls in and, where relevant, whether the planet is retrograde (in apparent backward motion).

The rising sign (ASC), the Midheaven (MC) and the starting degrees of all twelve houses are listed too. This table is a technical summary of how the sky looked from your birthplace at the moment you were born; interpretation is built on top of these data.

Don’t know your birth time? You can still get a birth chart

A good part of the chart can be read without a time. The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the slower planets usually stay in one sign for the whole day. The Moon, however, changes signs about every two and a half days, so if it switched signs on your birthday, the time becomes decisive; you can check this without a birth time using our Moon sign calculator.

The rising sign and house placements change roughly every two hours, so they can’t be calculated reliably without a birth time. If your time is entirely unknown, enter 12:00, look only at the signs of the planets and leave the houses and rising sign out of your reading. How do you read a birth chart?

A chart is read in four layers: the planet tells you what is being described, the sign how it is lived, the house which area of life it shows up in, and the aspects between planets how these energies support or challenge each other. Venus, for example, describes love and values; in Libra it becomes a search for harmony, and in the 10th house it stands out in your work and public role.

Begin with the Big Three, then look at where the planet ruling your rising sign is placed; it’s known as the chart ruler and is said to steer the whole chart. Next, note the houses where planets cluster and the balance of the elements (fire, earth, air and water). Astrology is a symbolic language rather than a fixed verdict, and it works best as a framework for getting to know yourself.

A birth chart won’t reveal a name or a specific person, but it does describe the kind of partner and the kind of relationship you find harmony with.
