Planetary Placements Guide

Planetary placements show where the main astrological energies are located by sign and house.

Content updated:

Planetary positions are calculated astronomically. Astrological meanings are symbolic interpretations, not scientific personality tests or predictions of future events.

Personal planets

Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars describe identity, emotion, communication, relationships and drive.

Social planets

Jupiter and Saturn describe growth, structure, responsibility and long-term development.

Outer planets

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto point to generational themes and deeper transformation.

How to read a placement row

Read the body’s name, its sign and degree, and then its house number. A row showing Mercury, 15 degrees and the third house combines distinct pieces of information. Degrees within a sign run from zero to thirty, while full ecliptic longitude spans zero to 360 degrees. Two bodies in the same sign are not necessarily at the same degree or in conjunction.

What does retrograde mean?

Retrograde describes an apparent decrease in ecliptic longitude as observed from Earth. It does not mean that a planet physically reverses its orbit. This calculator identifies it from the sign of the calculated longitudinal speed. The label by itself does not predict a favourable or unfavourable event. Keep the measured movement separate from its symbolic astrological interpretation.

Comparing results between calculators

Use the same birth instant, location, zodiac and house system in both tools. Although the Sun and Moon are not planets in astronomy, astrology tables conventionally group them with the other bodies. A planet can remain in the same sign while moving to a different house when the birth time or house system changes. That difference alone is not evidence of a software error.
